Baptism
Baptism is the first sacrament your child receives in becoming a member of the Catholic Church. As a child is presented for Baptism it is presumed that parents are aware of the importance of the decision you are making for your child.
Here at St Agatha's there are two requirements that parents need to undertake before the child's Baptism:
1. Attending an Information Evening at which the seriousness of the decision being taken for the child is discussed and also outlines what happens in the Baptism Liturgy.
2. Presentation of the child to the Parish Community is explained..
This takes place at Mass on a Sunday normally 1 week before your child's Baptism. The parish community welcomes the child and prays for him/her.
At St Agatha's, we consider these events to be important preparation for the Baptism of your child.
· Baptisms are held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month (Sometimes this may change due to other events happening at the Church)
· The Baptism ceremony commences at 12pm
· The Baptism ceremony is conducted during a liturgy of about 40 minutes duration
Godparents
You may have one, two or more godparents. At least one of the godparents must be a practicing Catholic. (A non-Catholic Christian can be a witness to the Baptism) Godparents should be 16 years of age.
